What Is Your Book About?

It seems a lot of people have Big Ideas for books and then they write them.  That is, there is a premise, from which a plot derives.  I have been tinkering with my Big Idea piece for Scalzi’s blog (to appear there on Aug 17th) and it has surprised me how difficult it is to get right.

My Thoughts on “Occultation” by Laird Barron

Finished “Occultation” by Laird Barron.

I can only recommend it if you have an inner sick freak that is not opposed to being deeply disturbed.  The prose is exquisite.  The subject matter decidedly foul.  In all of Barron’s stories he is adept at turning humans into animals and only after he has accomplished this does he go the full stretch and turn them into monsters.  The most intimate relationships routinely transform, either into outright acts of betrayal or into something akin to the way Dr. Frankenstein felt love for the individual parts that made up his creation.

Blueberry Pie and Good Reviews

4th of July came and went.

My sister and her husband rented out this rustic rural texas ranch house nested back in the deeply wooded hills west of Kyle Texas.  It has a reasonably sized pool in the back yard that’s partly shaded by a huge cotton wood or oak or whatever.  I swam with the kids for about 3 hours and felt genuinely relaxed for one of the first times in months.
